The Guidance Counselor will develop and administer a comprehensive program that promotes and enhances academic, personal, social, and career development for students in their respective grade levels. He or she will manage the early awareness to the college selection process, and help to create life skills and career exploration curriculum that includes a high school and college graduation roadmap.  The Guidance Counselor will help students evaluate their abilities, interests, and talents to develop academic and career. The ideal candidate will bring a passion for the mission of Broome Street Academy and a belief that all students, given the right opportunities, will have the chance to succeed.


  • Serve in a school of just over 300 students as half of a two person guidance counselor team, providing education and guidance on the HS process to students and families
  • Act as school Scheduler with the support of the data and scheduling team
  • Assist students with strategies on transitioning  to the next grade level
  • Consult with and serve as a resource for students, guardians, parents, and teachers regarding the developmental needs of students, including determining priorities for students and their resource needs
  • Discuss and support the transfer process for over-age under-credited students as necessary
  • Collaborate with school staff and administrators to ensure that students are academically on grade level
  • Maintain accurate and complete student records as required by laws, district policies, and administrative regulations and prepare reports as needed or as requested by Head of School
  • Attend meetings, conferences, and in-service trainings to keep abreast of best practices and professional trends
  • Conduct evaluation sessions with the students, using interviews, counseling sessions, interest and aptitude assessment tests, and other methods to evaluate and advise students, guardians, parents, and teachers
  • Work within non-traditional school schedules and organizational structures that meet the needs of our students
  • Handle any appropriate responsibilities and functions as assigned by supervisor


  • Master’s degree in School Counseling with all appropriate certifications, required
  • 3+ year’s experience as a School Guidance Counselor or equivalent required
  • Demonstrated knowledge of NYS educational sequence(s) and Regents Exams
  • Knowledge of the college admissions process, including financial aid and scholarships
  • Strong organizational and communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Experience in and passion for urban, public education required (NYC preferred)
  • Proficiency in PowerSchool and ATS strongly preferred
  • Experience in planning and design of small schools preferred
