Dear Broome Street Academy,

We write to you today with heavy hearts, as we must begin by acknowledging the horrifying tragedy Jacob Blake and his family are enduring.

A belief in racial equity and social justice have always been at the core of BSA’s identity. We know Black Lives Matter, and we stand in solidarity with all members of our school community, in full condemnation of the events in Kenosha, Wisconsin. As educators we are particularly sensitive to the fact that this latest outbreak of police violence took place in front of children. As we respond, we’re thinking about the ways racial trauma deeply and negatively impacts Black and brown children across the country, and here at BSA.

It is our sincere hope that you and your family are staying safe and taking care of your mental health. We want to remind you that BSA and The Door have social workers and counselors who are here to support anyone who needs to talk. If you’d like to learn more, please contact msoffrin@broomestreetacademy.org.

A few reminders:
1. On Thursday, September 10, BSA will start the year remotely, with all instruction taking place virtually.
2. On Monday, October 5, we plan to begin giving BSA students the option to come to our school building to receive in-person instruction one day per week.

Please review our detailed plan for the fall semester online at broomestreetacademy.org.

Thinking of you, and wishing you safety and peace,

Respectfully yours,
