Responsibilities

  • Develop lesson plans that ensure the mastery of state learning standards (Common Core) and any additional specific learning standards set forth by the Academy
  • Differentiate daily lessons and continuously refine teaching methodologies to meet the needs of all students
  • Remain up-to-date on all laws and best practices associated with students with suspected disabilities and special education needs, communicate all relevant information and changes to relevant staff
  • Maintain a caseload of special education students.Continuously refine curriculum and unit plans and provide thorough and thoughtful reflection on all unit plans
  • Plan and collaborate effectively to ensure student achievement
  • Maintain knowledge of student achievement data, evaluate progress, create appropriate modifications and data-based action plans
  • Maintain records of students in information systems
  • Ensure students attain the achievement goals of the Academy’s accountability plan
  • Provide direct and indirect instruction to large and small student groups
  • Evaluate students’ progress and use data to drive instruction
  • Maintain and enhance expertise in a specified content area
  • Participate in all required school professional development activities and meetings
  • Coordinate lesson plans with other teachers and reinforce student knowledge through interdisciplinary planning
  • Observe other teachers and provide constructive feedback on teaching practice
  • Abide by the Academy’s open door policy by welcoming observers into your classroom
  • Provide direct and indirect instruction to large and small student groups
  • Prepare students adequately for all required assessments
  • Maintain constant communication and coordination between various service providers and caregivers
  • Actively participate in case conferences with service providers
  • Carry out the necessary functions to maintain a visually stimulating and welcoming classroom environment
  • Engage in effective and appropriate classroom management
  • Build and maintain a Teacher Portfolio showcasing growth and strength in planning and preparation, classroom environment, instruction, and professional responsibilities
  • Attend school-wide events and caregiver conferences
  • Support school-wide initiatives and maintain a positive and solutions-oriented attitude

Qualifications

  • New York State Teacher certification in a relevant subject area (Students with Disabilities)
  • Minimum of three years of teaching experience and demonstrated experience working with a vulnerable student population such as young people from high poverty communities or in marginalized housing situations
  • Dual-certification highly preferred
  • Demonstrated expertise in subject area as shown by significant undergraduate or graduate coursework in content area
  • Ability to engage the interest of students, meet student achievement goals and be held accountable for student results
  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate tests and other measurements of achievement
  • Must be flexible and resilient in the face of very intense and heavy work situations
  • Demonstrated ability to work well with and engage the participation of parents and other student care-givers
  • Work effectively as a team member
