Dear BSA Students and Caregivers;

We know that our students and our community are feeling the effects of this crisis very deeply. We are sorry to see our community in pain. More than ever, we wish that were able to be together in person to support one another.

We want to send our love, positivity and encouragement to all of you who have been speaking out and calling for equity and justice. Broome Street Academy stands with you. Our community of educators and our entire staff is with you.

Black lives matter.

As the events of the last few weeks have unfolded, many of us have been left distraught, and found it all but impossible to process. We’re still in the middle of the pandemic, and still working through how it has changed our lives, and now we must process the murder of yet another unarmed black man at the hands of the police.

Taken in isolation, the murder of George Floyd would deserve all of the outrage it has sparked, and more. But of course, this tragedy did not occur in isolation. It’s part of a wicked pattern, a series of tragedies so vast they cannot be counted – tragedies inflicted upon black and brown Americans at the hands of racist institutions that defend and enable the actions of racist individuals, which together continually disregard the most basic human right, to life.

We are inspired by the strength of the young people in our community. Thank you for speaking out.  Your voices are unique and necessary, and we support you. As educators, we work hard every day to empower our students to express themselves and participate as citizens, and we are so proud of you.

BSA is here to help you learn, and to ensure that you are well and prepared for life after high school. If you need anything, please know that we are here to support you. We know that there is a lot more going right now, and we understand that these circumstances can make the work we do together more challenging.  We hope that the work we have done as educators to connect young people with the wisdom of the past will nurture you in this moment.

On behalf of the entire Broome Street Academy staff, we wish you as much peace as possible during these turbulent times, and we stand together as a community.

Yours in sorrow and solidarity,

Melissa H. Silberman
